SAHARA

Society for Scientific Advancement of Hill and Rural Areas

We believe in volunteer spirit and social service for change with the formula of Nature – Culture – Alternative technology

Our values firmly lie in “seva” (service), “Atmanirbhar samudaya” (self-reliant communities) and “vaigyanik manodasha” (scientific temperament)

Save Earth today for tomorrow

About us

Society for Scientific Advancement of Hill and Rural Areas (SAHARA) came into being during the formative years of Great Himalaya National Park (GHNP) during 2000.

When the park authority found it challenging to address the issues of local people, including forest-dependent livelihood and rights, then Conservator of Forest, Mr. Sanjeev Pandey and Mr. Rajender Chauhan, whose ancestors had been living off this land for centuries and had lost his rights himself, decided to work together in addressing these issues and find a way to involve the locals in the process.

SAHARA came into being with a mandate of women empowerment and community-based sustainable livelihood generation in 17 backward Panchayats around GHNP.

In recent times, SAHARA has been leading the work around Community Forest Rights (CFR) and other socio-cultural and environmental issues around forests, rivers and natural resources and livelihoods in Banjar and other parts of Kullu district
